RES 2026 Summit in Astana: A New Stage of Environmental Cooperation in Central Asia

On April 22–24, 2026, the Regional Environmental Summit (RES 2026) was held in Astana, attended by A.U. Issayeva, Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations at Shymkent University, Doctor of Biological Sciences, and Professor. The summit brought together Central Asian countries to promote coordinated dialogue on key climate and environmental issues.

At the plenary session, the presidents of Central Asian countries, as well as Armenia, Georgia, and Mongolia, delivered speeches, along with the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan. High-level representatives of the United Nations also participated, including Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs; Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); and Tatiana Molcean, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The summit was also attended by heads of environmental agencies from Central Asian countries, as well as from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Germany, Belarus, Türkiye, Italy, China, Cambodia, Serbia, Mongolia, Croatia, Japan, Afghanistan, the Russian Federation, and other countries.

Within the framework of the summit, plans were made to develop cooperation with Shymkent University in the field of joint research and international collaboration.
