Academic mobility

 Academic mobility is the transfer of a student or employee for a certain period to another educational or scientific institution (in their country or abroad) within the framework of a joint educational, research program, as well as on the basis of bilateral agreements.

 The main goal of academic mobility

The main goal of academic mobility is to ensure the quality of Kazakhstan's higher education in accordance with international standards, and to increase its competitiveness. 

What are the benefits of an academic mobility program?

This program provides an opportunity for training and scientific activities of students and teachers in foreign partner universities. Academic mobility programs are designed for a limited period, usually a semester or an academic year.

Participation in mobility programs gives students a number of promising opportunities and advantages:

  • to gain invaluable international experience in the scientific and educational sphere;
  • expand professional knowledge and practical skills;
  • to receive useful linguistic practice;
  • acquire the experience of training and communication in an international cross-cultural group.

Deadlines for accepting applications for academic mobility programs

  • Applications for summer semester to be submitted in autumn
  • Applications for winter semester to be submitted in spring

More detailed terms for applications submission will be announced on the University’s web-site and in social networks.

 External Academic Mobility Program

Conditions of participation in the program

Students of the 2−3rd years and 1st year students can participate in the external  mobility program. Last-year students are not eligible to take part in the mobility program, since the last year requires completion of internship and fulfillment of a thesis.

Also, students should have good academic performance in all subjects and a high level of proficiency in a foreign language, if they plan to study at one of the partner universities abroad.

Financing

The University partially finances external academic mobility. In addition, Students are able to find sources of additional financing and apply for grants.
Also, students can also obtain external grants, awarded by partner universities or ministries of education of other countries.

Transfer, the differences in subjects and distance learning courses should be discussed with the head of the department.

List of documents for participation:

  • Student's statement;
  • Learning Agreement;
  • Copy of passport;
  • Current transcript (certified by the official stamp of the university);
  • Individual Curriculum (certified by the official stamp of the university);
  • Certificates of IELTS, TOEFL, HSK, etc.;
  • Letter of Recommendation (for master degree students).

 

Internal Academic Mobility Program

Conditions of participation in the program

Students of the 2−3rd years and 1st year students can participate in the internal mobility program. Last-year students are not eligible to take part in the mobility program, since the last year requires completion of internship and fulfillment of a thesis.

Financing

Training is provided on a fee-basis, except for partner universities who send their students on a reciprocal basis. Payment is made based on the selected semester.

How to Apply for Academic Mobility Programs:

1. Choosing a University.
Carefully research the available programs and partner universities. Discuss your choice with your academic advisor and the Department of International Cooperation.

2. Checking Requirements.
Before applying, make sure that your academic performance and language proficiency meet the program requirements.

3. Preparing Required Documents.
Prepare all necessary documents in advance: transcript, language certificate, motivation letter, and letters of recommendation.

4. Submitting the Application.
Once all documents are ready, submit your application online or directly to the coordinator of the Department of International Cooperation within the established deadlines.

5. Selection Stage.
A committee will evaluate all applications. Selected candidates will receive the results and instructions for the next steps.

6. Preparing for Departure.
Prepare thoroughly for the upcoming trip: attend the orientation session, obtain a visa, and arrange accommodation to ensure you are fully ready for your new international experience!

The Dual Degree Program
The Dual Degree Program (DDP) provides students with the opportunity to study simultaneously at two universities under a joint academic curriculum and, upon completion, to receive diplomas from both institutions.

Program Advantages:
  • acquisition of valuable international academic experience;
  • enhanced competitiveness in the global job market;
  • access to advanced knowledge taught by qualified professors from partner universities;
  • the opportunity to earn two diplomas — from Shymkent University and a partner foreign institution.

Duration of Study:
Undergraduate level: 2+2 or 3+1 model;
Graduate level: 1+1 model.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • strong academic performance;
  • proficiency in a foreign language;
  • motivation to study at a partner university abroad;
  • financial readiness to participate in the program.

Partner Universities:
Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizami.

Language of Instruction:
Courses are conducted in Russian and English.

Outcome:
Students who successfully complete the Dual Degree Program receive two diplomas — one from Kazakhstan and one from an international partner university.

Within the framework of international cooperation, Shymkent University hosts guest lectures and masterclasses by professors and specialists from various countries. This provides students and faculty with the opportunity to directly engage with global experience and practices.

English Speaking Club

The English Speaking Club is a friendly space where students can improve their speaking skills, gain confidence, and overcome the language barrier through real-life conversations.

Sessions are held regularly and include:

  • discussions on current topics,
  • language games and debates,
  • group work and presentations.

By participating, you can:

  • expand your vocabulary,
  • improve pronunciation,
  • speak more fluently and confidently,
  • meet new people and cultures.

Sessions are led by experienced instructors or native speakers. Language level: Pre-Intermediate and above.
Participation is free.

Student Visa C-9
The C9 visa is intended for international students. This visa allows multiple entries and exits to and from the Republic of Kazakhstan within one year and must be renewed annually.
  • Required documents for obtaining a visa to the Republic of Kazakhstan:
  • Original foreign passport (must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiration date and contain at least 2 blank pages);
  • Consular fee;
  • Completed visa application form with a photo;
  • Certificate of fingerprint registration;
  • RCA address code.

For obtaining a visa abroad (visa invitation process):
  • An international student must provide:
  • Original valid foreign passport for entry to Kazakhstan (valid for at least 3 months after the visa expiry date, with at least 2 blank pages);
  • Information about the embassy address where the visa is processed and the student’s residence address.

Important:
The exact list of required documents should be verified at the Embassy or Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan where the visa is issued.
The applicant is personally responsible for the accuracy of all submitted documents.
Working Visa C-3
The C3 visa is intended for foreign employees and allows multiple entries and exits to and from the Republic of Kazakhstan within one year. The visa must be renewed annually.

Required documents for obtaining a visa to the Republic of Kazakhstan:
  • Original foreign passport (valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiration date and containing at least 2 blank pages);
  • Consular fee;
  • Completed visa application form with a photograph;
  • Certificate of fingerprint registration;
  • Nostrified diploma (for teaching positions);
  • Copy of the employment contract;
  • Apostilled marriage and birth certificates (if applying for family members);
  • RCA address code.

For obtaining a visa abroad (visa invitation process):
A foreign employee must provide:
  • Original valid passport for entry into Kazakhstan (valid for at least 3 months after the visa expiry date, with at least 2 blank pages);
  • The address of the embassy where the visa will be issued and the employee’s residential address;
  • Copy of the nostrified diploma (for teaching positions);

  • Copy of the employment contract.

Migration Procedure for Students and Employees from CIS Countries
Citizens of CIS countries are required to obtain a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) after arriving in Kazakhstan.
Required documents for foreign students:
  • Original passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiration date and containing at least 2 blank pages;
  • Certificate of fingerprint registration (dactyloscopy);
  • IIN (Individual Identification Number);
  • If the student does not live in a dormitory — notarized consent from the apartment owner for accommodation (if the consent is issued in the name of the student’s parents, a birth certificate is required);
  • RCA address code.
  • Required documents for foreign employees:
  • Original passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiration date and containing at least 2 blank pages;
  • Certificate of fingerprint registration;
  • IIN;
  • Copy of employment contract;
  • For family members applying for TRP — originals and notarized translations of marriage and birth certificates;
  • If not living in a dormitory — notarized consent from the apartment owner;
  • RCA address code.

Important Information:
Foreign employees residing in Shymkent must inform the Coordinator of the Department of International Cooperation in case of any change of address;
Each entry and exit must be reported to the Coordinator of the Department of International Cooperation;
According to current regulations, the host institution (university) must notify the Migration Service about the arrival and change of residence of a foreign citizen within 3 working days;
In all cases (visa, TRP, or visa-free regime), the notification is submitted through the host institution — the foreign citizen cannot contact the Migration Service directly;
Failure to report arrival in a timely manner may result in a fine.
